They walked with borrowed thunder,
Seven sons in a single line,
Calling on a Name they’d only heard,
thinking all would be just fine.
“By Jesus whom Paul preaches
Come out!” they boldly cried;
But heaven’s power is never held
By lips where faith has died.
The darkness paused and answered,
A voice like cracking stone:
“I know Jesus. I know Paul.
But who are you, unknown?”
Then terror filled the chamber,
As shadows sprang to life;
The sons who came as conquerors
Fled naked from the strife.
The Spirits power is not a garment
You wear for show or fame;
It burns within the yielded heart
That bows before His Name.
So learn from Sceva’s children
The peril of borrowed light:
Only those who walk with Christ
Can use His name and might.
