Jot down the first thing that comes to your mind.
Ode to the Prompt-Happy Blogger
(Why Do I Waste So Much Time Answering Prompts on WordPress?)
I sat down to write my great novel today,
With coffee in hand and ideas on display—
But a ping on my screen gave a sly little nudge:
“New prompt is up!” (Oh dear… now I won’t budge.)
It started so simply, a harmless delight:“
Describe your dream breakfast.” I typed with great might.
Then came, “Do you dance?” and “What’s in your drawer?”
By lunchtime I’d written eleven posts more.
I once had ambition, I once had a plan,
To publish, to edit, to grow as a man!
But now I just sit here and ponder the moon,
Or write haiku on forks while forgetting the spoon.
My garden’s gone wild, my laundry’s a mess,
The cat eats my bookmarks, but I really must stress:
This wasn’t the life that I’d pictured or planned,
But those prompts—they command with invisible hand!
“Write about Tuesdays.” “Your most awkward kiss.”
“Your feelings on pickles?”—I can’t say no to this!
It’s WordPress’s fault, I am wholly enslaved,
By that one little question: “What’s the last thing you craved?”
Now dinner is burning, my tea’s gone all cold,
My spouse shakes her head (this is getting quite old).
But still I press onward, with wit and with rhyme,
Because wasting this time feels… oddly sublime.
So why do I do it? Why take the bait?
Why let these prompts so consume my fate?
Because deep down I know, it’s cheaper than shrinks,
And more fun than folding my laundry, methinks.
So here I shall sit, till my keyboard gives in,
And the prompt of all prompts brings my Pulitzer win.
Until then, dear reader, don’t judge me too fast,
I’m a prompt-answer addict… and I’m having a blast.
